More Affordable Housing needed for Regional University Students

A study by the University of Melbourne has revealed that students from both rural and regional areas of Victoria defer offers of a place at university at double the rate of their city counterparts.
The outcome is that 40% of students who defer their studies never take up their position in the university course, prompting the South West Local Learning and Employment Network to urge action.
They have said that more affordable accommodation needs to be made available in Melbourne for university students from country Victoria   Chief executive of the Network, Toni Jenkins, said that the ability to locate suitable accommodation is crucial for rural students wishing to attend university.
The study indicated that if people can attend the university course of their choice for the first 12 months, they are much more likely than metropolitan people to complete that course with good grades, she noted.    Source:
