Home Ownership Dream Alive in Perth
An independent report jointly commissioned by the Department of Housing and Planning has revealed that Perth residents of all ages and incomes still prefer to own a free-standing house, and are prepared to trade-off location, house type and size to realise their dream of owning their own home.
The study, The Housing We’d Choose: A Study for Perth and Peel, was based on a six-month survey of 1,000 people, and revealed that 79% still favour the separate house with the “white picket fence” option.
The report has been released at a time when Perth city and surrounding suburbs are about to undergo a plethora of unit and apartment development that will last for the next few years.
While 35% of people would choose semi-detached housing as an option, only 12% of Perth’s current housing stock is semi-detached. This has highlighted a mismatch between peoples’ demand preference and current housing supply, the report revealed.
