More people trading shares online
More investors are starting to trade shares online, according to Australian online stockbroker CommSec.
CommSec said it had just over 50 per cent of the online share trading market, with almost two million accounts.
About 500,000 were active traders who had traded in the past six months.
National Australia Bank said it had also increased customers from 140,000 to 174,000 since October last year.
CommSec general manager retail distribution Brian Phelps said confidence in shares had returned since the global financial crisis.
Mr Phelps said the company was opening 2000 new trading accounts each week – an increase from
1200 accounts each week previously this year.
Confidence in the Australia share market was strong this year with the All Ordinaries up about 20 per cent.
CommSec said most online traders were males aged 45 to 55 years.
