7 Things You Should Never Put In the Dishwasher

7 Things You Should Never Put In the Dishwasher

Got a new dishwasher or using one for the first time? Make sure you know what you can and can't put inside it. Here are some pointers on what to leave out:

1. Anything that is wood

Wooden utensils, cutting boards, or spatulas are a big no-no for all washing machines. Hot water and heat can cause wooden items to warp and bend, making them lose their shape. It can also make wooden kitchen items appear dull. Make sure to hand wash and air dry them instead.

2. Cast-iron skillets

These kitchen items needs a little more TLC than your other pots and pans. They shouldn’t be placed in the dishwasher because it will rust them and wash away the seasoning that prevents food from sticking. You can clean your cast-iron skillets by pouring one cup of kosher salt into them and then rinsing with warm water.

3. Insulated mugs and bottles

If you place your insulated mugs and bottles in the dishwasher, the space between the outer and inner shells can fill with water. It will then make an annoying sloshing sound and it will also compromise its insulating effect. It’s better if you hand wash them.

4. China and crystal

China and crystal are very delicate so if you toss them in the dishwasher there is a possibility that they will chip, fade, lose their finish and even crack. Don’t risk destroying your precious, expensive items. Just hand wash them instead.

5. Anything with a label on it

If you’re planning on cleaning your jam jars, you should remove the labels first or simply wash by hand. Anything with adhesive labels is not dishwasher safe. The label could clog the dishwasher, get stuck in the filter, and damage the machine.

6. Knives

Take good care of your knives by hand washing them. Tossing them in the dishwasher will cause them to dull very quickly. However, putting butter knives in the dishwasher is fine.

7. Aluminium cookware

Check if your aluminium cookware such as pots and pans is “dishwasher-safe.” If it isn't, wash it by hand. Placing it in the dishwasher will cause it to oxidise and fade even after a single cycle.
