6 Home Security Tips That You Should Know

Whether you’re at home, on holiday, or are just going out for a couple of hours, it’s important to properly secure your house.

Here are six security tips that will help you secure your home and your possessions:

1. DIY Security Door and Windows

The simplest and cheapest security system for your home is to DIY a security door and windows. You can stick a piece of timber, a pipe or a metal bar in the track on sliding doors and windows to stop them being opened.

If you have doors with glass panels, it’s easy for burglars to break the glass then reach in and open the doorknob from the inside. To prevent this from happening, you can remove and replace your glass panels with wood and secure the door with deadbolts which can only be opened with a key.

2. Install sensor lights

One inexpensive option to protect your home is to install sensor lights or motion sensors. This will automatically light up a dark garage, footpath, or area in your yard once it detects movement in its field of view. These lights can be useful when you’re navigating a dark part of your house, and also at night when you and your family are asleep so you know if there’s a nearby intruder.

3. Alarm system installation

Alarm systems are an effective way of deterring burglars from breaking your house. Some systems allow you to use your smartphone to view security camera footage, lock your doors, receive a notification when a motion sensor detects movement, turn lights on and off and contact a security company automatically.

4. Keep the lights on

Keeping the lights on will make it look like someone is at home even if there’s no one around. If you have devices that can control lights remotely from your smartphone, you don’t need to have the lights on 24/7 since you can turn the lights on at night and switch off in the morning when you’re away.

5. Secure your valuable possessions

Stash your valuable possessions such as jewellery, gadgets, cash and important documents in a safe deposit box or hide them in unexpected places in your house. Do not hide them in obvious spots like the bedside table or your dresser.

6. Double check everything

Before you leave the house, make sure that you have got everything in order by making sure that the alarm system is working and the doors and windows are securely locked. You should also cover your windows and glass doors with curtains or tall shrubs so burglars will not see what and who is inside the house.

Securing your home is an important responsibility of every homeowner. Follow these home security tips to ensure everything is protected when you're away from home.
