We spent the day volunteering with Childhood Cancer Support, assisting at homes across Brisbane where families stay while their children undergo paediatric oncology treatment.
Throughout the day, the team took on a range of hands‑on tasks to help create more comfortable and welcoming spaces. This included building outdoor furniture, assembling play desks and chairs, moving bed bases, completing yard work, and preparing rooms by making beds and washing linen.
These efforts help ensure families have safe, functional, and homely environments during what can be an incredibly challenging time. By improving outdoor areas and shared spaces, the team also helped create room for children and families to relax and play, offering moments of normality during long periods of treatment. It was a rewarding experience for everyone involved, with the team proud to support families who have relocated to Brisbane.
Who is Childhood Cancer Support?
Childhood Cancer Support has spent more than 50 years providing a home away from home for regional families who need to relocate to Brisbane for paediatric oncology treatment. With treatment often lasting months or even years, many families travel long distances and rely on accessible, long‑stay accommodation close to care.
They are currently raising funds to complete building works on a new Childhood Cancer Support village in East Brisbane, close to the Queensland Children’s Hospital. This is a huge undertaking but one that will ensure that more families can benefit from free long stay accommodation while they focus on their child’s treatment.
